The Oregon State softball team is headed back to Cathedral City, Calf., with hopes of a little more success in this weekend's four-day, six-game tournament.

The Beavers opened their season at the Cathedral City Kickoff Classic where they split four games.

With a very tough schedule ahead, the Beavers arrived in Cathedral City Wednesday evening with their first game coming Thursday afternoon against Tennessee Tech. Oregon State has never faced the Golden Eagles, who are 5-4 on this young season. They are led by freshman Holly Thomas, who is hitting .391 and has scored six runs in her 23 plate appearances this season.

The Beavers will then battle with Kansas in a late game Thursday night. The Jayhawks have surrendered losses all five times they have faced Oregon State, the most recent coming in 2007 and are 4-5 this season.

Oregon State resumes play on Friday morning against No. 12 Northwestern. The Wildcats went 4-1 in last weekend's Louisville Slugger Invitational in Vegas, with their only loss coming to the No. 4 UCLA Bruins in a high-scoring affair. Northwestern is led by their All-American senior infielder Tammy Williams, who is hitting .467 with two home runs.

The Beavers then play their second ranked team in a row when they take on the No. 20 Tar Heels Saturday afternoon. North Carolina won the Carolina Classic tournament last weekend and has won seven-straight games. The Tar Heels prove to be a tough opponent with All-American Danielle Spaulding, who owns a 4-0 record with a 0.00 ERA, and junior shortstop Christine Knauer, who is hitting .364 and has been successful on all eight stolen-base attempts this season.

Oregon State will play their third and final ranked opponent of the weekend when they play the No. 9 Lady Vols Saturday afternoon. Tennessee is 9-1 on the season and has won two straight against the Beavers. They, like the Tar Heels, are on a seven-game winning streak and went undefeated at last weekend's Early Bird Tournament in Florida. The Lady Vols are led by sophomore outfielder Kelly Grieve, who is hitting .500 this season and has crossed the plate a team-leading 15 times. Pitcher Cat Hosfield is leading the way in the circle for Tennessee and is 6-1 with a 1.12 ERA this season.

OSU concludes play on Sunday morning where they will take on Georgia Tech (6-2). The Yellow Jackets suffered one loss at last weekend's Lipton Invitational against host team No. 2 Florida. Sophomore Christy Jones is hitting.565 this season with ten stolen bases, having only been caught once. Sophomore Kristen Adkins is 4-0 in the circle for the Yellow Jackets.
