The Office of the Registrar has updated the graduation requirements for seniors wishing to graduate. The deadline to file an application for graduation has now been changed to the end of the second week of any term that a student wishes to finish schooling for their degree.

The office of the registrar implemented the deadlines because of late applicants that make it nearly impossible for students to graduate in time.

"What's been happening in the past is that our office has been getting applications for graduation three days before commencement and that makes it impossible for us to sort through," said Kent Kuo, the university registrar for OSU.

The new deadline is effective beginning this upcoming spring term. Seniors wishing to graduate must submit an application into the Office of the Registrar no later than Friday, April 10. "We have implemented this deadline for the student's benefit and it is firm," Kuo said.

It's also highly recommended that students apply for graduation three terms earlier than the term they want to graduate in. This suggestion will help students if they happen to be in a situation where they need missing credits. "It's just a recommendation for students," Kuo said, "we want students to be able to know early enough that they need to make up missing courses so that they will be able to get their degree when they planned."

Students are fine with the changes, some thinking that it's for the best.

"The sooner you graduate, the sooner you can start in the real world and gain more experience," said Fides Lim, a senior graduating in the spring.

"It's best to apply earlier because sometimes you make mistakes or forget about classes you should have taken, and you don't want that to happen too late. That happened to a friend of mine, and she wasn't able to graduate at the time she wanted," said Anna D'Silva, a sophomore in general science.

The faculty senate approved the new deadline on Jan. 8 of this year and the deadline will be fully enforced come spring term.

"The more time you have, the more terms you have to realize that you might have missed something. By applying earlier you have an option to catch any missing courses and be able to finish them in time for graduation," Kuo said.

Seniors wishing to apply for graduation or learn more about graduation requirements and deadlines may find the necessary information online at http://oregonstate.edu/registrar/GradInfoLinks.html, or may meet with their academic advisor to discuss graduation.
