When it comes to taking a career path by the horns, Kalena Bell has a firm grip.

Bell, a senior majoring in liberal studies with an option in new media communications, is fully aware that in order to succeed in the "real world," it's necessary to take risks and be willing to make connections.

Bell's interest lies in sports broadcasting, and she is taking her own advice. She currently does freelance work for ESPN and recently received KBVR's Most Outstanding TV Personality award.

Bell's interest in sports broadcasting stemmed from her active involvement in KBVR since her sophomore year and her lifelong love of sports in general. As a member of OSU's crew team her freshman and sophomore year, and a coach her junior year, she has dedicated her senior year to focusing on finishing her degree and improving her knowledge of sports and broadcasting in every way.

"I am constantly trying to learn new things outside of the classroom," Bell said. "For example, I am constantly visiting the FSN and ESPN websites and learning more about their companies, along with learning sport terminology and recent events."

John Hendricks, a senior majoring in liberal studies with an option in new media communications and the KBVR assistant station manager, is Bell's co-host for the Beaver Sports Show. Together they produce, direct, host, write and edit all the content.

"Kalena and I are in our second term as co-hosts of the show," Hendricks said. "I had worked with Kalena before as a news anchor. So when I started looking for someone to co-host the show with me, I asked her because she has the 'TV look' and is comfortable in front of a camera."

"She has really put in the time to become good at what she does. It's not as easy as Kalena makes it look, and what she has now took some hard work and dedication."
