Mayda's "The Interrogation" was a weird experience for me. On my first pass of the CD - the one where I listen very closely - I hated it. There was too much going on, too many jarring switches of style from one sample to the next. It seemed like the CD was skipping in my computer, but it wasn't. It was just frustrating.

Then I put the CD on as background music while I was just hanging out. After a while I realized that the songs that had appeared to have no coherence suddenly fit together when I wasn't listening to them so closely. Even more, the hooks began to seep into my brain, and I began to enjoy the very CD that I had totally despised at first listen.

So to do my due diligence, I listened to the CD again, closely once more, and I have to say I like it enough to throw it on a party mix or something similar. And that's a big deal, people.

Some of the tracks that I thought were a total loss - way too choppy - on first listen actually keep consistent qualities throughout their drastic switches. "My Circuitry," which is the opening track, is one of these tracks. Another example is "The Interrogation." As the title track, it carries a lot of weight on the CD, but I think the layers do that well. Listen for the operatic voices towards the end. Also, the funky synth does wonders for the track.

One track that is just too choppy is "Focus." Mayda should take her own advice from the lyric "maybe a little less talking/maybe a little more movement/maybe a little less pressure/maybe a little more music." I love the bass line and the drums, but wish she wouldn't cut away to the jarring piano so quickly. Focus yourself, Mayda.

Lyrically, Mayda is fairly inventive, though she does have some points where she stumbles. "Before we begin/you better stretch out those limbs/ because you need that finesse/ if you're gonna be all up in my business" she sings on "My Circuitry." Ok, I can get behind that one.
