OSU faces $13.4 million in budget cuts
Amounts to a 5 percent budget reduction effective by June 30, 2009; some cuts will go into effect immediately
Issue date: 3/2/09 Section: News
OSU is beginning to feel the nation's economic turbulence.
In a recent letter to staff, President Ed Ray and Provost Sabah Randhawa said that they are predicting and preparing for a 5 percent budget reduction as the Legislature reconfigures the state budget.
The 5 percent could mean as much as $13.4 million in budget cuts across the board that will be effective before June 30 of this year.
About $9 million of this will come from the education and general fund, and the remaining $4 million or so will be cut from statewide public service programs, such as the research and extensions programs that OSU boasts across the state.
OSU-Cascades Campus will also see a $390,000 reduction before the end of the year.
Action will be taken immediately, including freezing salaries across the board except for those that are contractually guaranteed to increase.
Much of the changes that will be made effective immediately include requiring review and permission from appropriate deans, provosts, or presidents of the university before approving certain actions through the university, new classes, hiring decisions and salary matches.
There will also be an essential-travel-only policy put into place, where out of state requests for travel will need to be approved by a dean, vice provost or vice president.
Randhawa's website currently features information on the budget cuts and notes that much of the reductions will be "drawn from OSU's fund balances."
