To many there is nothing better than collegiate sports - the sense of loyalty, pride, excitement and, of course, the satisfaction gained from triumphing over your rivals; whether on the field, court or mat, sports have always been a large part of college life. To each of us, college athletics means something different. We wanted to know what the students of OSU thought of college athletics.
"Athletics in college creates a lifelong connection to the school," said Brad Rose, a sophomore in civil engineering. "In the pros, people move on and get traded, but college sports have that sense of camaraderie you can't find anywhere else."
"Having a good athletics program makes me happy", said Tim Chen, a freshman in electrical computer engineering. "Plus, it creates an easy way to start a conversation."
Whether it be for the love of the game or because it creates something fun to talk about, sports at the collegiate level has a large influence on all in many different ways. Some love sports at college for the social aspect the games bring-the tailgaters, the parties and the food.
"Beer, hotdogs and football-the only thing that could make it a better day would be if I could get a girlfriend," said Matt Poeschl, a sophomore in business accounting.
"I like the social aspects that sporting events create. Having a good sports team unites the university and brings us closer together," said Zach Lowry, a freshman in biology.
Having a strong athletic program also helps bring in money from endorsements and donors, which in turn provides us with better facilities. When Oregon State won the College World Series money poured into the school.
People like being a part of winning organizations. As well as bringing in money, having a strong athletic program influences incoming students.
"I love having sports as a big part of the school. Having a strong athletic program was an important factor in my decision when I was looking at colleges," said Stephie Elsner, an undeclared freshman.
College athletics also create the opportunity to experience new sporting events-Oregon State offers a wide variety of sports from gymnastics to wrestling.
"I enjoy being able to attend a wide variety of sporting events. By having so many sports, it brings a larger diversity of people to the games," said Jordan Coelho, a freshman in zoology.
Sports at college have a variety of meanings for people from all walks of life. At OSU, we are fortunate to have a very successful athletic program.
There are few schools across the nation that can match the quality and diversity of our sports teams. For a few students the athletes themselves have become sources of inspiration.
"I am not a tall man by any means, in fact I am very short," said Nathan Merlin, a sophomore in education. "When I see the Rodgers brothers on the field it inspires me; I feel like I can accomplish anything."
