Oregon State Police believe it could have happened Sunday or Monday night, and have posted fliers around the residence halls asking students to give them any information they might have about the whereabouts of the brand new, and apparently expensive, banners.
The banners had only been installed at the entrance to OSU for a matter of weeks before they were stolen. Todd Simmons of news and communications services at OSU believes that the theft stems from the recent heightened media attention that OSU has received as a university.
"It's a first to have our banners lifted on campus but the school is so popular right now and we're getting so much notoriety around everything," Simmons said. "From our great basketball coach and team, to our academic excellence and Jane Lubchenco being very near to being confirmed as the head of NOAA.
"We're riding this great wave of popularity and notoriety so we're guessing that's why it happened," Simmons added.
While the act of theft in the case of the recent popularity OSU is experiencing is somewhat of a backhanded compliment, Simmons added that the banners were very expensive.
"We're happy that the banners are so popular, as is the university now, but we would hope that people would please leave them where they are."
