Twice a week in a room in Langton Hall, you can see acrobatic feats and daring flips executed with precision and grace. You will also see your fair share of falls and spills. But the OSU Gymnastics club is a welcoming environment for people of all skills levels, and with its competitive team back from its first meet of the season, the excitement about this club fairly crackles in the air.
Gymnastic Club, which meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., is not exclusively for those who have been on a high bar since a young age. Many members are brought in by classes at OSU. Junior Christy Anderson was interested after experiencing gymnastics firsthand.
"I first started coming to gym club because I took Tumbling 1 with Mary Law spring term of freshman year and it was really fun," Anderson said. "One of the things she told us about was gymnastics club. I never did gymnastics through high school or anything; I just love playing on the equipment and having an outlet."
The supportive environment of gymnastics club makes it the perfect setting to acquire new skills.
"My favorite thing is just coming here and trying new things," said Gymnastics Club regular Phoebe Arnett. "I like having people help me and help me get better. And my friends are all here so we all just have a lot of fun together messing around."
Arnett, too, came to Gymnastics Club because of tumbling classes.
"I have Tumbling Two classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and I really wanted to get my back handspring down, and I thought coming to Gym Club would really help me get in the extra practice," she said.
New skill levels are cultivated in this atmosphere as well.
"A lot of times you look foolish being an 18-25-year-old doing forward rolls, but it's a good, supporting environment," said senior Warren Gray. "I wanted to challenge myself in a way that I didn't challenge myself growing up and I thought gymnastics would be a great and ridiculous way of challenging myself physically."
