With spring just around the corner, Oregon State women's track is getting fired up and ready to go.
Led by seniors Holly Thompson and Sylvia Veal, the track team opened their season on March 7 at the Linfield College's Icebreaker Meet. More than 30 college and club track teams participated in the Icebreaker Meet and 17 Oregon State runners partook in it, including sophomores Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson, Kambria Schumacher and Jennifer Macias, as well as freshmen Mellissa Kauffman and Cassandra Schumacher, all running the 3,000 meter steeple chase.
Seniors Rebecca Mishler, Jenny O'Connor, and Holly Thomson ran the 1,500 meter race, along with a slew of underclassmen Oregon State runners.
Coaching women's track is Kelly Sullivan, in his fifth year at Oregon State. Under the watchful eyes of Sullivan, the team has boasted several awards, including 88 Pac-10 Academic honorees. The team has also generated an Academic All American team every year since the program has returned. With Sullivan as the head coach, four school records have been broken.
Looking out at the coming season ahead, Sullivan feels extremely confident in his young ladies to go out and get the job done.
"We have a lot of expectations," Sullivan said. "Each one of the ladies in the program have individual goals, especially the upperclassmen."
The team boasts six returning seniors and adds three juniors to make for an outstanding leadership crew. Not only does Oregon State's track team feature experience, but the women are also rounded out with a promising freshman class, led by redshirt freshman Casey Masterson.
Masterson recently competed in the Husky Classic on February 14, breaking the school record for the indoor mile with a time of 4:51, beating the prior mark by more than five seconds. Adding to the underclassmen's success has been sophomore Abby Chesimet, who earned the school's second-best indoor 3,000 meter time at the Husky Classic with a time of 10:02, which was also a personal best.
