Last week, Oregon State completed a magical night by scoring 197.500, the team's highest score of the 2009 season.
The No. 9 Beavers are now out to prove that not only was last week's meet the real deal, but that they can take their magic act on the road. The Beavers hit the road for the first of what they hope to be four weeks, beginning at No. 13 Missouri and hopefully ending at the NCAA Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
Oregon State now features three gymnasts ranked in the top 10 on four separate events. Junior Mandi Rodriguez, who is ranked No. 5 in the nation, leads the OSU vault team, while a freshman-sophomore pair leads OSU's arguably best lineup on bars. Sophomore Jen Kesler is holding down the No. 6 spot in the nation, and after being moved to the anchor position of the bars lineup, freshman Leslie Mak is sitting pretty at No. 4.
"I need to continue on what I've been practicing in the gym and making sure I make that happen when I compete," Mak said. "There is always room for improvement, and even on beam I need to work on getting those sticks and cleaning up things."
Rodriguez is ranked in the top five both in the all-around and on the floor; in all-around, Rodriguez sports a 39.455 Regional Qualifying Score, putting her right at No. 5. Ranked No. 1 in the nation for a couple of weeks earlier in the season, Rodriguez is now No. 4 on the floor exercise.
Mak and Rodriguez have become a dynamic duo at OSU, as Rodriguez earned Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week, her fourth honor on the year. Mak earned her third Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week honor.
