The Oregon State men's basketball team took another big step in "rallying the legend" on Monday night before it even stepped on the floor, as it hosted the University of Texas-El Paso Miners in game one of a best-of-three championship series in the College Basketball Invitational.

The Beavers' run to the championship is the first three-game post-season winning streak since Oregon State made it to the Final Four back in the 1962-63 season, and by the way the Beavers started the game Monday night, you'd have thought they were playing for the Final Four.

"This was as loud as the Civil War game," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "I don't think you can get much louder than this group got tonight, and you could see when they got loud our guys' chests filled up with confidence and pride."

Oregon State opened the contest with a 9-0 run and showed no signs of slowing down as the team increased the lead to 22-9 behind the hot shooting of Lathen Wallace and Rickey Claitt - the Beavers made their first four 3-point attempts of the night.

However, UTEP refused to let the game get out of hand, and the Miners retaliated with a 6-0 run of their own that included two emphatic dunks off turnovers courtesy of UTEP's senior stud Stefon Jackson.

"When you fall behind a team that's very deliberate like Oregon State is, you'll always have a chance to get back," UTEP head coach Tony Barbee said.

The Beavers were able to stem the tide, though, as they came up with a few steals and slams of their own to go back up by double digits.

Yet with every Beaver run, the Miners came right back. As the Beavers suddenly ceased taking it over and started turning it over, they found themselves right back into a close back-and-forth battle at halftime with a 35-29 lead.
