Beavers lose

EL PASO, Texas - Stefon Jackson scored 28 points, nine during a critical second-half run, and UTEP beat Oregon State 70-63 in the second game of the College Basketball Invitational Championship series on Wednesday night.

The Miners (23-13) trailed 44-40 with 10:55 to play when Jackson sparked a 14-2 run with a three-point play.

Randy Culpepper scored 17 points and gave the Miners a 46-44 lead on a 3-pointer.

Jackson scored the next six points to give his team the lead for good after an Oregon State basket.

Roeland Schaftenaar led Oregon State (17-18) with 17 points. The Beavers were down 56-55 with 4:52 remaining, but UTEP fended them off by scoring the next seven points, including four from Jackson.

Game three is Friday in El Paso.

Eight honored

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Eight Oregon State women swimmers were recognized by the Pac-10 Conference, announced today by Commissioner Tom Hanson.

Brittney Iverson, who hails from Corvallis, is a junior majoring in biology. This is the second first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honor for Iverson.

Ginny Omundson, a senior co-captain from Wilsonville, is majoring in nutrition science. This will be her first first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honor.

Kayla Rawlings, a senior co-captain who hails from South Surrey, B.C., is majoring in exercise and sports science. This marks Rawlings' third Pac-10 All-Academic honor.

Receiving Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mentioned were Lisa Chewning, Anna Crandall, Keri Holmstrom, Rachel Polack and Agata Szewczuk.

Men ranked 15th

The Oregon State men's Varsity 8+ crew is ranked 15th in the inaugural poll of the 2009 season by USRowing released on April 1, 2009.

The Beavers are one of four Pac-10 crews in the USRowing Top-25. Washington finds itself at the top of the rankings, collecting eight of a possible 19 first-place votes. California is ranked third with one first-place vote in its favor, while Stanford is ranked fifth.

Oregon State has already collected one victory over a ranked team, as Northwest rival Gonzaga enters the rankings at 19.

Softball rescheduled

The Oregon State softball doubleheaders against Portland State have been rescheduled. The two doubleheaders were cancelled due to inclement weather on March 14 and 23.

The Beavers will head to Erv Lind Stadium on Wednesday, April 8 for games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Oregon State will host the Vikings on Tuesday, April 14 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex.

Oregon State hosts No. 2 Stanford and No. 12 California this weekend as part of Strike Out Cancer weekend. The Beavers will face the Cardinal on Friday at 3:00 p.m. before back-to-back games against the Golden Bears on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively
