"Stanford had a pinch inning where they scored two runs and really swung the bat to take the win," said OSU head coach Kirk Walker.
Oregon State (17-19, 2-6 Pac-10), walked away with four hits in the game, led by sophomore catcher Audrey Roderfeld who went 1-1 with a run and a walk. Roderfeld led off the bottom of the second inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior infielder DeAnn Young hit an RBI-single to left center field to bring Roderfeld home.
"It could have been better, could have been worse," Walker said. "Our pitching [Friday] was solid, but we need to be swinging the bat more."
No. 2 Stanford (33-2, 4-1) answered back tying up the game after Ashley Hansen hit an RBI-single to right field and picked up another run the top of the fifth off a single hit by Shannon Koplitz to score.
Stanford closed out the game in the last inning to score two more runs at the top of the seventh inning and the Beavers couldn't answer back. Freshman pitcher Paige Hall pitched the entire game but was charged with the loss, putting her record at 9-6 for the season.
"We need to try and swing the bat more," Hall said. "Stanford's pitching was excellent and they are obviously a really strong team."
In Saturday's game, however, the Beavers came back from the loss to the Cardinal with a close victory over the No. 12 California Golden Bears 5-4.
Junior pitcher Kelly Dyer started the game for the Beavers and threw the first five innings before freshman pitcher Paige Hall closed out the game, allowing only one hit to seven batters in two innings and was credited with the win. This marks Hall's tenth victory in the 2009 season.
Roderfeld and senior catcher Stefanie Ewing put their bats together for all five RBI and three of the Beavers nine hits total to put up the win.
"The pitcher got me struggling on the outside for the most part of the game and I was rolling over a lot of pitches she was throwing me, so the defense shifted and I set up to hit the outside pitch and drove it up the middle," Roderfeld said.
