Alert, guns policy need to be fixed
Issue date: 4/7/09 Section: Forum
I feel so much safer after the successful demonstration of the effectiveness of the OSU Emergency Alert System yesterday. Now I know if there is a maniac on the loose, three hours later I might expect an e-mail (if I happen to be near my computer). What a joke!
If this had been in effect at Virginia Tech, no doubt the death toll would have been higher as the predictable number of idiot gawkers would have made it a much more "target-rich" environment. The administrative rule against carrying concealed weapons on campus, for those that are licensed, is unlawful and unwise.
It very well may cost lives someday. If you are capable of rational thought on the issue (start by looking up the statistics on how many crimes committed with handguns can be attributed to individuals with permits), maybe you will join me in asking the OUS Chancellor's Office to rescind this rule. It could save your life someday.

Well said! It's about time someone from the professional academia stood up to defend their second amendment rights. Of course, none of this would be necessary if the Oregon University System actually obeyed the laws instead of passing illegal administrative rules that infringe upon all of our rights. (Continued…)

Next week, April 13-17, the College Republicans will be having their annual Second Amendment Week. Along with a rally with Lars Larson (Th @ 5), a drawing for a rifle (all week), and a FREE-for-students CCW class (Fri @ 5pm in WITH 109), I will personally be attempting to pass legislation in ASOSU that will further encourage the administration to abide by state law (last week I successfully passed legislation that encouraged the administration to make sure all OARs are adherent to state law, but next week I will specifically address ORS 166. If no one other than law enforcement officers are allowed to carry guns on college campuses, then anyone not in a law enforcement uniform with a gun is obviously a sign of danger. (Continued…)
