Spring, with all its fun and oddities, has finally sprung

Like a wet dog shaking water from its orange and black fur, OSU has finally freed itself of winter's chilly hold. Up until last weekend students have stowed themselves in sweaters and buildings, avoiding the harsh outdoor climate as much as possible. Some took refuge in video games and television, while others hibernated in front of their computer screens.

I chose the latter, playing some game called "Mob Wars" on this newfangled thing called Facebook. The great thing about this is I get to use all my favorite cliché mob lines in context, sort of, like this one from "The Untouchables": "He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue."

Things went on like this until this last weekend, when spring burst onto the scene and sent thousands of allergy-prone students scrambling for tissues.

It came without warning. It came without coats. It came without sweatshirts, fish sticks or floats. One step outside and it was plain to see that winter days were over.

For all of its sunny advantages, however, spring is a weird season. After the dark, stifling cold of winter, the warm, cloudless days feel too serene and light. A lot of weird news seems to pop up during spring, too, like the story about a group of pirates who attacked what they thought was an unarmed commercial ship. Much to the pirates' surprise and dismay, it turned out to be a German navy supply ship.

Spring has always been considered a dead, slow season for movies, but this year has been a bit different. If you've driven past a movie theater or watched television in the past few weeks, you may have heard about the new "Fast & Furious" film that hit theaters recently.

While I'd rather play "Mob Wars" for two hours than sit through another of those films, a lot of people apparently feel otherwise. The critically panned sequel has been a relatively huge success with audiences, making it the biggest April opening ever.

Why are people flocking to bad movies like this when there's plenty to do outside? The turn in the weather has brought with it opportunities for football on the intramural field and Frisbee in the quad.
