The Oregon legislature is looking to cut between 10 and 30 percent of the Oregon University System Budget, as we found out Monday. The economy is in the toilet. Finding a job and actually keeping it has never been more difficult for us. Tuition is about to increase.

The world as we know it might just be coming to an end … well, let's not be overly dramatic here, folks.

Yes, times are looking tough. But to quote Winston Churchill, "If you are going through hell, keep going."

Before you start to panic, look around and open your eyes to the positive opportunities you have every day.

Students, staff and community members: grab hold of your education, your jobs, and your spare time, and make the most out of them. Do a little spring-cleaning and vamp up your productivity levels this term.

Want to expand your education for free? Go to a public lecture once a week. There is a free lecture on or near campus almost every night, featuring interesting individuals and new topics that you might not get to learn about in classes for your major.

Today, for example, instead of watching TV, you can participate in free Asian Food Sampling from 3-5 p.m., attend a Chicana Workshop from 4-6 p.m., learn why "Geek is Chic" from 4-5 p.m. or gain a better understanding of misclassification between patent offices from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

What's better than meeting new people, learning new things and trying new (and did we mention free) food? All it takes is a quick look at the OSU Calendar of Events and you're set. Just because it's random knowledge doesn't mean it's not valuable.

Need a job but don't have one? Student Media on campus is almost always hiring. There are enough different jobs available to suit any major or personality, so don't be scared.

Got a job already? Worried about keeping it? Use your fear as motivation to work harder and prepare yourself for possible layoffs. Join a social and corporate networking site like LinkedIn and get recommendations from colleagues in case you do find yourself in an unfortunate situation. Also, take advantage of training opportunities whenever you see them. They might come in handy down the road.

Want to vent? Attend a forum or meeting in which you can voice your opinions on topics that matter to you most. Write a letter to the editor. Bother your legislators.

Just do something. Don't give up.

We're all in this together. Every person at OSU will be affected when we find out how much money is going to be cut from the OUS budget. Take a stand, be productive, prepare yourself and be supportive of the people around you.

And if worst comes to worst, take a break to read fmylife.com. Your life isn't that bad after all.
