April is chock full of commemoration. It is National Pecan Month, Mathematics Month, National Soyfoods Month and Fresh Florida Tomato Month. Amen for those southern tomatoes.
But did you know April is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month?
According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the first large-scale sexual violence prevention activities took place in 1978 with Take Back the Night rallies in New York City and San Francisco. After years of organized events and activities surrounding violence prevention, April became the official month to commemorate the prevention of sexual assault in 2001.
Thankfully, SAAM is not some confusing acronym or a positive idea that has no relation to OSU students. With the support of several noteworthy groups and organizations, including Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) and the Presidents Commission on the Status of Women (PCOSW), OSU is hosting many events this week to celebrate the meaning of this month.
Today at 8 p.m. in the MU Ballroom is the No Woman Left Behind event, where three women who rescued a girl from a gang rape at a party in California in 2007 will be telling their stories and helping launch the NWLB campaign.
Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is the Clothesline Project and Wall of Support in the MU Quad.
Wednesday at 7 p.m. is the Take Back the Night rally in the MU Quad, where supporters will rally for the safety of everyone.
Other events are also happening this week all around campus during the daytime and evenings, making it possible for anyone to stop by and lend support.
So show your support this powerful month. Hear the amazing women speak at NWLB. See the power of the survivors at the Clothesline Project. Be a part of the crowd at Take Back the Night.
Be sure to take care of yourself and know that counseling services can be found at SASS if need be.
And the message of this month can be carried for the rest of the year. Listen to a survivor if he or she needs you. Look out for your friends at parties. Continue to learn about the ways where you can make a difference.
Guys and girls and everyone in between should feel free to participate at all the events of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Men are as important as women in the fight against campus sexual assault.
So make this April a great month. Building a campus community that does not condone sexual violence is the first step toward making OSU as safe, happy, productive, insert-any-positive-adjective-here as it can be.
