Portland's treasures not in hiding
Scott Dennis
Issue date: 4/14/09 Section: Forum
Both places are renowned for their environmental and pedestrian-friendly landscapes. Both have buildings designed by famed Portland architect John V. Bennes, who was responsible for the Women's Building and Weatherford Hall, among others.
Oregon State has a number of infamously haunted places around campus, as does Portland's historic Old Town/Chinatown district. These paranormal points can be of interest to any students who are fascinated by the supernatural or peoples' obsession with it. The White Eagle Café in Portland is a former brothel, hotel and boarding house that is reputedly haunted by the malicious spirits of former tenants.
Not to be outdone, Oregon State has Sackett Hall, a wonderful little complex that sits atop an eerie series of shadowy passageways known as the catacombs. Details on this hidden part of campus are scarce, but all agree that the catacombs are no place to be alone eating jelly beans.
Portland really is a beautiful city, and has taken great care to keep its storied past available to those who seek it. There are tours galore of the city's great landmarks above and below ground, and perhaps Oregon State should take a look at how this has worked out for the City of Roses. It's a fantastic tourist destination, and home to a fantastic variety of exotic and modern architecture I've ever seen. Be sure to check it out.
