What is the biggest secret about today's job market?

Finding a job is really not as hard as you think, because finding one is almost entirely up to you, according to OSU's Career Services.

Despite economic turmoil, Career Services believes that finding a job shouldn't be a problem if you're willing to put in the effort to search.

"Everyone is feeling a little bit of hopelessness about there not being anything out there," said Adry Clark, assistant director of Career Services. "Instead of stopping, this is the time to step it up."

Oregon's unemployment rate reached 12.1 percent last month - tying the record for the highest it has ever been (which was 27 years ago), according to an OPB report.

Because of this statistic, professionals want students to find a balance between freaking out and being apathetic.

"Corvallis is not suffering compared to a lot of the world," Clark said. "In other cities, students are frantic because they are around a lot of people being laid off. Here in Corvallis, we aren't facing this - we're kind of all in a little bubble here. I'm not sure students really see the urgency of looking and doing whatever it takes."

OSU offers a wide variety of options to those interested in the job-hunting process, however.

A quick walk down to the basement of the Kerr Administration building will lead students to Career Services. Students, staff and alumni can stop by Monday through Thursday 1-4 p.m. for a drop in appointment if they need any advice about their future career.

"Really one of the problems with students is that they don't know exactly what they want," Clark said. "If you are on a path where you don't know what to do and need help, definitely come to Career Services."

Tyler Hanna, a sophomore in music, dropped into the center for this reason.

"I have been here before one time last semester, and I took tests to find out what I would enjoy working with," Hanna said. "I am doing music right now, and now I want to know if I should stay with music or do something else."
