Making time for one last practice the day they leave, Oregon State men's rowing team has been working extra hard for their competitive weekend in California.
For the third week in a row, men's rowing has been ranked No. 15. This weekend marks the halfway point of the season, and the Beaver's will head to Redwood Shores, Calif., to take on three top ranked teams.
In San Diego at the Crew Classic on April 4 and 5, the Beavers placed two boats into the Grand Finals and one into the Petite Finals. On Saturday, the Freshmen 8+ and Open 8+ boats both finished second to put them each in the Grand Finals on Sunday. California beat out Oregon State for first place in both races.
The freshmen boat was challenged by UC Santa Barbara, but Oregon State pulled ahead in the end for a comfortable second place finish. There were similar results for Open 8+ early in a head-to-head race with Orange Coast College, but Oregon State easily took second after establishing a lead. The Varsity 8+ boat finished in fifth place on Saturday, which secured them a spot in the Petite Finals the following day.
Varsity 8+ kicked off Sunday morning by competing in the Petite Finals against Syracuse, Yale, Michigan and Purdue. Oregon State finished third behind Syracuse and Yale, but finished only less than seconds in front of Michigan. The Freshmen 8+ took a fifth place finish behind three Pac-10 teams: Washington, California and Stanford. Open 8+ took a fourth place finish in the Grand Finals to end the weekend for the Beavers.
The Beavers have had two weeks to prepare for their trip to California this weekend. They will be facing last year's defending IRA Champion Wisconsin, as well as No. 1 California and No. 5 Stanford.
"We have been working hard all week on a lot of technical work," said Ian George, senior team captain. "It will be pretty fierce competition this weekend, but I am confident we will do our best."
Oregon State will begin the weekend tonight with Varsity racing at 6:10 p.m., Open 8+ racing at 6:30 and Freshman 8+ at 6:50. Wisconsin is currently ranked No. 2 and has won nine previous national championships.
