Long weekends typically mean sleeping in late and hanging out at the BBQ late into the afternoon. The men of Oregon State soccer gave it a whole new meaning. Oregon State played not one, not two, but three games this weekend. Tired legs and great experience were the result.
The Beavers tallied four goals and only allowed one throughout the span of matches. Two wins on Sunday, 3-0 at 1 p.m. and 1-0 at 6 p.m., helped the Beavers recover from Friday's loss.
The first game of the weekend was the Friday night match against the Portland Timbers development team. While the score of 0-1 for Friday's game wasn't the highlight of the night, many good things resulted from playing a batch of professional hopefuls. The time on the field was spread throughout the roster and the coaches got a good look at what next year's crew should bring.
"Chris Harms and Matt Drake really stepped their game," said captain Justin Woodward about the future of his squad.
The strangest part of the night was seeing an onslaught of seniors who wore orange throughout their collegiate careers don the black uniform of the Timbers. Josh Brown came through for the Timbers, leaving a mark in the scorebook that would be the first and last to be tallied.
"It's weird playing against our own team," said forward Tracy Hasson. Hasson joined Ryan Callahan and Daniel Leach as part of the contingent to join the Timbers.
After a free Saturday, which the Beavers used to recoup and bond, two games awaited them on Sunday. Two semi-pro teams, Southern Oregon Fuego, from Ashland, and Cascade Surge, from Salem, came to Paul Lorenz Field to challenge the Beavers.
The strongest of the three games saw goals from a wide variety of players. Danny Mwanga, Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, had his first goal of the spring to start the game off against the Fuego.
Shortly after, Travis Anderson, OSU's newest player from Australia, took the play-of-the-week honors with an absolute gem of a goal. Ripping it from close to 30 yards out, Anderson placed the ball top-shelf, just out of reach of the Southern Oregon goalkeeper.
