Trevor Schmidt, an OSU senior in English, has big plans after graduation this spring. He will be embarking on a three-week nationwide tour to launch his new album, "Mixtape Genesis." Trevor Schmidt is a solo artist who is known by his stage name, "A Starlight Incident."
Founded in 2008, A Starlight Incident has a sound that centers on acoustic, alternative and pop. A Starlight Incident's influences include David Bowie and Schmidt's cousin, Dane Schmidt, of the band Jamestown Story.
The tour begins June 18th in Portland and will continue through 12 Midwest states. With the company of Schmidt's father, A Starlight Incident will be traveling by pickup truck across the country. His father, a jack of all trades, will be taking on the role of band manger, security and merchandise sales.
"Mixtape Genesis," a six-track CD, was inspired by the idea that "when making a mix tape, more than one thing is being made," Schmidt said. With the assistance of Photoshop, Schmidt was able to convert some of his in-class doodles into the album artwork.
Of the many stops on the tour, Schmidt is especially excited to play in Duluth, Minn., where he has some relatives and extra local support. Schmidt has dedicated the album to his family, friends and fellow MUPC employees.
"Honestly, nothing beats a good road trip, and I can't wait to get on the road," Schmidt said of his expectations for the tour. "Part of the reason is my affinity for beef jerky from gas stations and discovering new hole-in-the-wall places to eat."
Being on the road and moving from place to place, Schmidt will have to find time for his preshow ritual.
"I almost always take a half hour nap. When I wake up, I chug Mountain Dew to get a good buzz going" said Schmidt.
The tour is promoting "Mixtape Genesis," which will be released May 5. It can currently be heard on Myspace and YouTube. Of the six tracks, a favorite is "Timeless." Schmidt said he enjoys this track because "it is about letting go of doubt and just letting good things to happen to you." By mid-May, "Mixtape Genesis" will be available on iTunes, Amazon, Napster, Rhapsody, Snocap and Audiolife, although you can also conveniently buy a CD out of the trunk of Schmidt's car.
As far as future plans for A Starlight Incident, Schmidt said he will be laying down some new tracks, playing some local shows and planning a southwest tour.
"A Starlight Incident might be adding a few members later this year, but that's still up in the air," said Schmidt. "The rest of my plans are secret, and kept on scratch pieces of paper in a safe".
There is a complete lineup of the Mixtape Genesis tour on Myspace (www.myspace.com/astarlightincident), where you can also buy merchandise and keep updated on A Starlight Incident's status.
A Starlight Incident is playing tonight at a free Late Night concert hosted by the Oregon State Musicians Guild at Dixon Rec Center. The concert goes from 9 to 11:50 p.m.
A Starlight Incident is opening and plays from 9-9:30 p.m.
