In the fourth Civil War meeting of the 2009 season, the Oregon State Beavers made it clear they will remain the state's powerhouse with a 10-2 decision over the University of Oregon.

With no outs in the fifth inning and three runners aboard, senior outfielder John Wallace put an 0-1 pitch into the right field bleachers, a blast that broke a 2-2 tie and a hit that would account for the Reno, Nevada native's first grand slam in his four-year-career.

"That's actually the first time I have ever hit a grand slam in my life," Wallace said. "It came at a big time for us too. They had come back and tied it 2-2, so I was just glad I could help the team out and separate from them in the inning."

The Beavers would add two more in the inning after a Ryan Ortiz walk was plated from a double by Jared Norris; Norris would later tally his own run when he crossed the plate on an Adalberto Santos single through the middle.

Oregon State tallied a total of 10 hits on the afternoon, while three players contributed multi-hit performances, in Wallace, Jared Norris and Adalberto Santos.

Santos was not expected to play for Oregon State and later became a game time decision.

"Basically we haven't had him for three weeks," head coach Pat Casey said. "He said he felt good today and I wasn't going to play him. He came into my office and said he wanted to play and for a player to come to me and say he wants to play is pretty good."

Starting the game at third base for the Beavers, Stefan Romero ended his eight game hit-streak with an 0-for-4 outing. Romero left three batters on base and is now batting .297 on the year.

From the other side of the diamond Oregon State's pitching was lights out, as freshman starter Sam Gaviglio earned his sixth win of the season. Improving to 6-1 while only tallying two starts, Gaviglio struck-out six of the 18 batters he faced and retired the side in order in four of his five complete innings.

"I felt that Sam pitched pretty good, other than one guy dumping a ball in left field," Casey said. "For us, scoring a lot of runs and putting crooked numbers on the board hasn't been something we have been able to do, so it was nice to do so."
