Oregon State men's rowing will go into the Windermere Cup races this weekend with high hopes of improving from the previous races held in California.

After dropping one spot in the US Collegiate Rowing poll to No. 16, the Beaver rowers have their work cut out for them.

This weekend's races are hosted by the University of Washington and Windermere Real Estate Company, and they will take place in Seattle on Montlake Cut. The Windermere Cup will host the crews of the men's and women's Brazilian Rowing Federation, University of Miami women's team and the Oregon State men's team.

All teams will compete against the men's and women's crew teams from the University of Washington. The Huskies men's rowing is currently ranked second in the collegiate poll and swept previously-ranked No. 1 University of California this last weekend. The Brazilian Rowing Federation will make it an interesting weekend, giving the crews an opportunity to race an international crew team.

"The race in Seattle is the biggest spectator race and to be in the main event at one of the biggest rowing races in America is special," head coach Steve Todd said. Todd believes Washington's big win over California makes the Huskies the biggest challenge of the weekend.

The Men's Windermere Cup is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday with races between the Varsity 8+ boats. Oregon State's Freshman 8+ will also compete in a dual race against Washington at 11:00 a.m. A Junior Varsity 4+ and a Freshman 4+ crew will start the day off, racing at 10:35 a.m.

After losing all races down in California at the Stanford Invitational, Oregon State can only hope the experience racing against such great competition will pay off in the upcoming weekend. At the Invitational held two weeks ago, the Oregon State men's crew teams competed against No. 1 University of California (currently No. 4), No.2 Wisconsin (currently No. 1) and No. 5 Stanford (currently No. 3). The competition has been tough for the Beavers this season, as they have competed continually against top-ranked teams.

Todd is excited with the improvement the Beavers have been making over the past few weeks, and he is hoping the team will continue to get better, and just in time for the Pac-10 championships, which will be the next race the men's rowing teams will compete in.
