When driving down 9th, it's easy to miss some of the higher quality eateries that Corvallis offers. Most of the restaurants are hidden amongst the various neon signs that promise deep fried goodies and a larger waistline.

It takes a trained eye to notice the actual finer dining out there. If you are looking for great Italian, might I suggest Pastini Pasteria? You won't be disappointed.

Established in 2001, Pastini offers a full menu of pastas, as well as delectable salads and soups.

Portland quickly raised it on a high pedestal, letting the restaurant expand to several other locations, and as of late last year, the Corvallis Pastini Pasteria opened. Pastini has a way of offering a dignified meal on an easy budget, with most courses offered around $10.

When I arrived on a Saturday afternoon, I was quite surprised by the atmosphere and prompt service. With some delightful music serenading in the background, I was very pleased as I scanned the menu.

The problem I had wasn't what I could afford, but what I could narrow it down to.

There were, surprisingly, too many choices, all of which sounded perfect. I finally came to the decision of the Orecchiete with Italian Sausage, a perfect blend of "pasta ears," spicy sausage and broccolini. I'm glad I had my brother, the culinary whiz, with me, or I would have had no idea what I was ordering. Pastini offers several different styles of pasta, all of which are described on the back of the menu - this surprised me because I thought there were only a few different ways of presenting pasta.

Shows what I know. I have to give it to the Italians for being so creative, as well as Pastini for presenting these creativities in several ways. Pastini also offers an array of wines and a full bar, elegantly accenting any meal, suiting anyone's needs.

My food arrived very promptly, and the smell was overwhelming.

I couldn't wait to enjoy it. As I slowly consumed the pasta, I had the opportunity to survey my surroundings.

The atmosphere at Pastini is quite appropriate, but not overwhelmingly formal. There are several Italian phrases on the wall, as well as a few comics to enjoy while you eat. The kitchen is also in view, leaving the customer able to view his or her unique meal being dished up only moments after ordering it.

Needless to say, I left Pastini Pasteria with a full stomach and a smile.

They treated me well. I felt as if I was in a five star restaurant with a college student's budget - a perfect environment for Corvallis.

Next time hunger strikes, I suggest skipping the fast food and moving straight onto Pastini Pasteria, conveniently located next to Jamba Juice, a great place for dessert. If you are in need of change or for a great place to take friends, might I suggest Pastini. You won't regret it.
