Guns on Campus: ASOSU gun restriction illegal

Dear Senators and Chairman,
As a student under your representation, I am writing this letter to express my disagreement with your votes during yesterday's senate meeting.
While there are two sides of the gun policy issue, both with legitimate points, I have grave concerns with the approach that ASOSU has taken to enforce their gun control policy illegally.
Regardless of the ideology to which people subscribe for reduction of violence and crime, the fact stands that ASOSU imposes a gun restriction that is illegal. The proper democratic method to address this discrepancy would be for ASOSU to remove the policy, organize and petition the state legislature to remove the legal block, and then reinstate the policy.
The policy ASOSU just upheld is an invitation to a long and unnecessary lawsuit. I do not want my tuition and student fees senselessly wasted defending something in court that clearly contradicts state law.
The dichotomy under which the democratically-elected ASOSU selectively circumvents democratically-instituted laws is truly appalling and shameful. Please do your duty to protect students from the needless wasting of our student resources, and be examples of democracy prevailing rather than lawlessness and disorganization.

Well put Brad. I am actually looking into a lawsuit, so you weren't far off base there. The only correction I have to you is that ASOSU actually does not maintain the rule; OSU, and even more accurately, the Oregon University System (ie the State Board of Higher Education) does. (Continued…)
