The OSU Panhellenic Council received not one, but two awards last month for academic performance and campus involvement at the annual Western Regional Greek Association leadership conference.

In the beginning of April, members of the council headed down to San Francisco for the annual event, which has been going on since 1948. The four-day conference takes place to provide chances to take leadership courses, hear prominent keynote speakers and participate in an awards ceremony that recognizes achievements by Greek councils from campuses across the western states.

The first recognition the OSU Panhellenic Council received was in Scholarship Achievement, an award given to the Greek council whose chapter members log a GPA well above that of the rest of the campus community. Last spring and winter terms, members of the OSU sorority chapters governed by the Panhellenic Council had a combined GPA of around 3.1.

As if recognition for academic achievement wasn't enough, the council also received the University Involvement award for the council's involvement on campus outside of Greek life.

Allie Sevall, president of the Panhellenic Council, said the council has been involved with many events that were extended to the entire community.

Sevall, a senior in women studies, has been involved in Greek life since the first week of her freshman year. She took over the council at the beginning of winter term this year.

According to Sevall, OSU Greek life has not been recognized in this way since 2005, and she says the fact that the council was honored with two awards makes the hard work all the more gratifying.

"It is awesome to be recognized for everything we have done," Sevall said. "We won two awards, which is a big accomplishment."

Some of the events put on by the council included a movie night in the MU that was open to all students, one which Sevall said was a big hit. The council also participated in events for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration.

The sororities on campus have also opened up their houses for public tours in order to show the world what a sorority is all about.

Alison Tanaka, a senior in civil engineering, was the previous council president and oversaw many of the accomplishments that the council is being recognized for. She wasn't able to attend the awards ceremony, but was still honored by the recognition.

"It's very exciting. We worked really hard," Tanaka said.

Universities from 14 states were present at the conference.

There are currently 10 National Panhellenic Council sororities at OSU.
