Most students begin their college careers living in residence halls for the first year or two. But after one too many stir-fry dinners or burgers from Calabaloo's, it may be time to move out and rent a house with some friends.
The rental process is seemingly daunting, but with a little research and from conversations of peers' experiences, the task at hand becomes simpler.
There are many different management companies throughout Corvallis, many of which cater toward Oregon State students who have specific needs and prefer being within walking distance of campus.
Pinion Property Management, Inc. is a Corvallis-based rental company owned by Paul Pinion, an alumnus of OSU. Its office is located close to campus, on Monroe Street next to the Soup Shop.
According to the company's website, it maintains a large selection of properties that range in prices in order to suit the needs of each tenant.
Brian Maloney, a senior in bioengineering, has lived in a variety of different houses throughout his time at Oregon State. Pinion Properties managed three of his previous residences.
Maloney said Pinion Properties had an excellent office staff that seemed to genuinely care about helping him find housing that was affordable and compatible with his needs.
"As I got to my junior and senior year, I decided that I wanted to live off campus in a large house with a huge yard and three-car garage," Maloney said, who compared it to living on campus for relatively the same price. He said he needed a place to store his ATV quad, dirt bike and car.
Maloney said Pinion was an excellent company and would recommend his fellow students to consider renting through it. He did say, however, that when maintenance issues arose, the management responded rather slowly.
IRI Properties is another management company that is frequently used by students when looking for off-campus housing. IRI features a variety of different apartment complexes as well as classic houses that tend to be close to the university.

Do NOT rent from IRI Properties! Their units are grossly overpriced and ridiculously outdated. The owner of the company places ill-experienced "managers" at each location who are inept at best (disorganized, rude, and highly inconsiderate). (Continued…)
