Mum's weekend
Issue date: 5/8/09 Section: Sports
Most of the time, I'm pretty occupied with things to do, which keeps my mind off how long I've been away from home. But then along comes occasions like mom's weekend.
In case you couldn't guess, my mother didn't come up for mom's weekend. I mean, how selfish of her, right? She didn't want to fly 32 hours and spend thousands of dollars to come see her daughter for the weekend?! No, I'm kidding - I didn't even tell my mom about this American occasion.
There's no such thing as mom's weekend in Australia. In fact, we don't even spell mom like this. We spell it mum. We have mother's day and that's it. Our mum's only get one day, not a whole weekend plus mother's day. I think it's because no one moves away to go to college. We all live at home for as long as possible in Australia.
It was really cute to see all the mums come in for the weekend. It was even better to see half of them beat their own kid in beer pong. But I saw some going to classes with their child. If I took my mum to class, she'd fall asleep. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree with that trait!
I've been away nine months now. It sounds bad, but I've developed a new lifestyle here, which keeps me entertained.
It's like a child in an amusement park. Actually, I shouldn't say child, because I'm older and I still love amusement parks. But back to my point. You get so excited and have to go on all the rides in the park. But after a while, your feet get tired from walking around so much and you want to go home. That's what it's like. My feet are just sore. Doesn't mean I don't love the amusement park!
Mum's weekend did make me miss home. When I first came here I was happy to get away from my family. But over time, I've slowly started to miss them. You don't realize how much they do for you until you don't have them anymore.
I'll be going home to visit in the summer. Summer here means winter in Australia. We are opposite in every way! So I'll basically go from winter back to into winter. Not that our winters are anywhere near as cold as here, but still.
But it's not too long now before I go home. Hopefully my family will come here next year. Then they will get two summers in one year. Actually, I think the fact that they would be getting an extra summer might be more appealing than the fact that they would be coming over to visit me.
