The annual Queer Pride Celebration kicks off this week to show support and raise awareness for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community on campus. It is put on by the Rainbow Continuum.

The Rainbow Continuum has been a fixture on campus for around 30 years, and it is an organization that supports the LGBTQ community on campus by putting on events and providing a safe environment for diverse interaction. They are currently located in the Pride Center.

There are several events scheduled throughout the week. Some are for entertainment and others are meant to inform, but everything is to raise awareness and further the cause for the LGBTQ community.

For fun, people can watch the Lube Olympics and Drag Racing on Thursday. These are a series of games that include various sexual paraphernalia followed by races of people in various forms of drag. These events will take place in the MU Quad.

There will also be a career development workshop geared specifically toward those in the LGBTQQI community that will include information on anti-discrimination laws and discussion of issues such as coming out at work.

Another information session includes LGBT Family Night for those thinking of starting a family or who are already a member of an LGBT family.

The drag show, arguably the most popular event of the week, happens Friday, May 15, in the MU. The show features drag queen Poison Waters as the host for the night's event. Last year, the show sold out early, and a big turnout is expected again this year.

There will also be an information booth in the MU Quad all week where interested parties can stop by and get information on Pride Week and the LGBTQ community, and support services available to them.

Affiliates from all over OSU and the Corvallis community - including ASOSU, the Office of Community and Diversity, and the Pride Center, among others - have helped to support this yearly event.
