"Bittersweet" seemed to be the word of choice for the Oregon State softball players as they closed out their 2009 season last weekend after dropping their last two games to No. 6 University of Arizona Friday (10-0) and Saturday (12-2).

"It's definitely bittersweet," senior infielder Paige Lowe said.

Head coach Kirk Walker also mentioned the end of the season being "bittersweet" as well.

"My thoughts on the last two games is not positive, and my thoughts on the seniors is very positive," he said. "They definitely made their mark in the program."

The Beavers (25-30, 4-17 Pac-10) went 1-2 in their last week of play after snagging a final Pac-10 win against No. 9 Arizona State Thursday, 5-4.

"Thursday was awesome, and it was a great team win," senior catcher Stefanie Ewing said. "We came out these last two games and played with a purpose, because we loved the game, and not what the score was."

Not much could be said about Friday's shutout against the Wildcats (41-14, 13-7 Pac-10). The Beavers tallied three hits while Arizona started off with a solo home run by Stacie Chambers and added nine more hits throughout the game.

"I still feel like we played really well and everyone went out and hit really well," Lowe said. "[Arizona's] a great team, and they are going to score a lot of runs, obviously. I think it's good going out and playing a really good team and still doing well. We played really hard."

Junior pitcher Kelly Dyer was charged with Friday's loss after facing five batters in the first inning. Freshman Paige Hall threw four innings, fanning two, and redshirt freshman Karmen Holladay came in to close out the game.

Saturday fared slightly more competitive for the Beavers. They counted six hits on the day with two runs and two RBI. Meanwhile, the Wildcats blew them out of the water yet again with 17 hits and 12 RBI, five of which came from K'Lee Arredondo, who also scored two runs. Hall was charged with the loss Saturday, putting her season record at 14-12.
