Sunday May 17, the Oregon State men's rowing team will compete against some of the top teams in the nation at the Pac-10 Championships at California's Lake Natoma.

Oregon State is currently No. 15 in the nation in the USRowing Collegiate poll, one position higher than it was a week ago. No. 2 University of Washington, No. 3 University of California and No. 6 Stanford are the Pac-10 teams that all sit ahead of OSU in the poll.

The men's rowing ream has been up against tough competition this season, and it has had experience competing against top teams. In the last two weekends of competition, Oregon State has faced off against top-ranked teams such as Washington, Stanford, California and defending IRA Champion Wisconsin.

"We are going into the Pac-10 championship not leaving anything behind. As a team, we have been practicing a lot - even in the wind - to help prepare us," said David Weir, senior rower for the Varsity 8+ boat. "Hopefully we can come as team and put it all together."

Along with the Varsity 8+ boat, OSU's Novice 8+ and Junior Varsity 8+ will be competing. The Novice 8+ kicks the day off at 1:50 p.m. OSU Novice 8+ will be racing against California, Washington, Stanford, WSU, UCLA, USC and University of Oregon.

At 2:30 p.m., OSU's Junior Varsity 8+ boat will race in a heat against Washington, California, Stanford and WSU.

The final men's event between the Varsity 8+ crew boats will be held at 3 p.m., just before the women's varsity Pac-10 Grand Final at 3:20. OSU's Varsity 8+ boat will race against Washington, Stanford, California, UCLA, USC and WSU. The Beavers hope to finish in a spot that will allow them to go on to the IRA Men's National Rowing Championship, which will also be held at Lake Natoma from June 3 to 6.

Weir is hopeful for a top-three finish.

"The team has a smoking fast start and a fast sprint going for us. Out of the four top-ranked Pac-10 teams, we hope we won't be the one team left out."

Earlier in the season, OSU raced Stanford and came within two seconds of beating the Cardinal in a dual race.

"We came back from a horrible race and almost beat Stanford," Weir said. The Beavers will have another shot at taking the Cardinal down this Sunday.

Head coach Steve Todd knows it will take a lot of effort from the Beavers to push on to victory.

"On Sunday, the Varsity will have to get out on Lake Natoma and execute their race, be fully focused on what they can do and have their best effort of the year," Todd said.
