Golf ends in 10th

The Oregon State men's golf team was in striking distance halfway through the final round but was unable to mount a comeback, and finished 10th at the NCAA West Regional in Daly City, Calif. on Saturday.

The Beavers started the third and final round at the Lake Merced Golf Club tied for 10th with UC Davis at 7-over par before posting their second consecutive sub-par round with a 3-under 285 to finish at 4-over at 868 (300-283-285).

By finishing out of the top five in the tournament, Oregon State misses a trip to the NCAA Division I Championship at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, hosted by the University of Toledo.

Paul Peterson led the way for the Beavers with a final round 5-under 67 to finish 1-under for the tournament at 215 (79-69-67). The round of 67 matched his lowest round of the season, which he had shot twice before.

Women earn two medals

LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - The Oregon State Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ boats each finished third at the 2009 Pac-10 Championships Sunday. All four of OSU's boats enjoyed strong races throughout the day and qualified to the Grand Finals.

The bronze-medal finish for the V8+ is the highest finish for the Beavers since the 2000 season, when the varsity boat finished third and qualified to the NCAA Championships.

The Beavers' 13th-ranked V8+ struggled to a slow start in the Grand Final, reaching the 500-meter mark in last place. Slowly but surely, the Beavers inched their way up in the field posting some of the fastest splits through the rest of the race. At the 1,000-meter mark, OSU had put Washington State in the rearview, and at the 1,500-meter mark, OSU had eased past USC. The Beavers continued to move up late in the race as they proved to be the fastest boat over the final 500 meters, passing Washington to erase a two-second deficit during the final leg.

Earlier in the afternoon, in the first Grand Final of the day, the OSU N8+ also earned a bronze medal finish. The Beavers reached the 500-meter mark, leading a four-way battle for third place with Washington State, Stanford and USC while Washington and California had surged to the early lead. The Beavers steadily pulled ahead, eventually putting open water between them and the competition.
