One, two, three … DODGEBALL! The famous words of Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn from the movie "Dodgeball" show the tale of two people competing in the infamous dodgeball competition, and Oregon State has a dodgeball team as well.

"The club officially started in 2006," said Bryan Ware, the team's vice president. "Unofficially, it started with a group of students in 2004."

President Ware and Vice President Kevin Pack lived together in the dorms four years ago, and one day noticed a bunch of people playing dodgeball in the quad in front of the Memorial Union. Since then, they have been to almost every practice.

The rules to the game depend on the tournaments.

"In tournaments, it is usually six-on-six and is more like the movie-style rules," Pack said. "We usually play something called 'Sham Battle.' If I were to hit someone, he doesn't get to come back into the game until I'm out. If I were to get 10 people out then I get out, they all come back in. It helps prolong the game, and you can have up to 30 people on the team."

Most people know the basic rules from the movie "Dodgeball."

"The general rules are accurate, but actual games seem to be more vicious than the movie. The movie sparked the start of teams though," stated the team leaders.

Annually, the team travels to the World Dodgeball Championships in the summer.

"The teams are mostly from the West Coast," Ware said. "It is hosted by the NDL, the National Dodgeball League. There is a team from Canada, but we are the only university to send a team."

The team also competes with local clubs and teams and plans on having its Civil War against the Oregon Ducks in the beginning of June.

Don't take this sport lightly, though. Players throw as hard as they can and are extremely aggressive with their play.

"I get hit in the face on a regular basis," Ware said. "I have received a bloody nose, but I still come down every week because it is a blast."

The team practices twice a week: on Wednesdays at Dixon from 8-10:30 p.m. and on Sundays at McAlexander Fieldhouse at 2 p.m.

"We usually play nine-on-nine on Sunday, but on Wednesday, we occasionally have up to 40 people," Pack said.

This sport is a great way to get out and be active while having a great time. The rewards outweigh the risks, and players are always giving upfront advice. Both Pack and Ware are willing to work hard to help make better players.
