Time to get our priorities straight

Pardon us, but we are confused.

As we write this we are sitting in Snell Hall, a building that frightens us. It's not haunted like Waldo (well, it might be) but it definitely has a few major flaws.

Once at a staff meeting, someone accidentally jabbed a pen at the wall, and it went completely through the material. Rust-colored water squirted out. Continually. For about ten minutes straight. That's right, Snell Hall bleeds.

Also, when we become angry and frustrated and feel the need to bang our heads against the walls in journalistic rage, the walls literally move. They have a lot more give than they need.

And we hear the elevator could break at any moment. We've heard it sparks. Great. Someone needs to send it up to CAPS to talk to it about anger management, please.

These daily encounters all point to the fact that this fabulous cyan-paneled building is not long for the world. We're okay with that, as long as it doesn't collapse on us.

What we're not okay with is why students fail to realize that some very bad things will happen to the programs housed inside Snell Hall if they don't do something soon.

Snell Hall is supposed to function as part of the MU. Unfortunately, it's more like the MU's ugly stepsister that does all the work. Other than housing student media organizations like The Barometer, KBVR TV and FM, Prism and Beaver Yearbook, Snell Hall also holds ASOSU, ISOSU, CAPS, the Office of Greek Life, the Office of Community Service and countless other campus organizations.

However, instead of moving towards a new building, the OSU student body would rather see some improved Rec Sports facilities on campus.

Are you as students willing to pay $17 per term to fix up McAlexander Fieldhouse and improve some tennis courts? Tuition is already rising at an ungodly rate, but apparently what you REALLY need is some new surfaces to play intramural sports.

Who needs buildings to house organizations that can help you when you're in need, hire you or even help you get a job later? Yeah, we don't think this makes sense either.

If we have money that will be spent on anything right now, it's not going to be recreational activity.

Some of us are just trying to survive. When you're on your third job just scraping by with rent and tuition, having a nicer playing field or indoor rec center isn't exactly on your priority list. Then again, neither is Snell Hall, and we understand that.

As students, it's our job to weather this economy and try to get our degrees. That means academics should come first and student programs should come second. Recreational activities should come third.

Get your priorities straight, folks.

Thank you for taking a stance on this, and the right one. Considering the multitudes of issues this campus faces and the financial situation of students and prospective students across the state, this is a simply awful plan. (Continued…)
