Warm weather means get out, do something!

Oh, the wonders of spring term.

The air outside is warmer and thick with the scent of fresh-cut grass and sun tan lotion. We're wearing sunglasses to class instead of raincoats. Like bears coming out of a long hibernation, we're shedding our cooped-up winter lifestyle and searching for the next great adventure.

Also like bears coming out of hibernation, you may have noticed that you've put on a few extra pounds. What with the warmth of winter comfort food and the lack of good weather, it's not uncommon for college students to gain weight during the winter months.

If last year's swimsuit feels a little snug, never fear. Summer is about getting out of school and getting into activities. You don't have to join a gym or go on a crash diet to feel good about your body; the opportunities for getting active are right here on campus.

Spring weather in Oregon is a fickle thing, but that doesn't mean that exercise has to also be so fickle. Instead of cancelling your jog because it's raining, why not organize a muddy game of Ultimate Frisbee with some buddies? If the weather is scorching and you're not feeling like taking that bike ride, swimming laps at the pool is a refreshing alternative.

What better way is there to greet summer than by trying something new? Dixon Rec Center offers a variety of "Fit Pass" classes every day of the week - ranging from cardio kickboxing to judo - for only five dollars a class.

If you've been suppressing an urge to try "Pop Hop Fusion," grab a friend and go for it. The worst that could happen is you don't like it, right?

Or you could trip on your feet and almost twist an ankle while attempting to bust a move to "Sexy Back" as the cute dance instructor looks at you like you're an idiot (maybe that was just me). The point is, you never know if you don't give it a try. Besides, you never know when you might discover a new hobby.

If you need to reintroduce exercise back into your life at a slower pace, that's fine too. Instead of driving to class, go on foot. According to thewalkingsite.com, walking a mile uses up roughly 100 calories. That means that you may have burned up that muffin you ate for breakfast by the time you've walked to and from class.
