In an October 2008 inspection, it was discovered that OSU improperly handled and disposed of leftover laboratory chemicals and hazardous wastes.
The university is being fined $18,600 for the citation.
According to the Department of Environmental Quality, the violations included illegal treatment of hazardous wastes, failure to determine whether or not waste was hazardous, and failure to label containers.
An article by The Associated Press said that the wastes include old solvents, paint, acid and laboratory chemicals.
According to OSU spokesman Todd Simmons, all of the infractions have since been corrected, and OSU does not plan to appeal the fine, citing its commitment and responsibility to protect the environment.
