Rec Sports proposal: Student opinion matters
Issue date: 5/27/09 Section: Forum
I am writing in response to the editorial, "Time to get our priorities straight." I would first like to state that Snell Hall, and many other buildings on campus, need extensive repairs. It is unfortunate that with the amount of money students spend on higher education our university is unable to fix a leaky roof. With that said, I believe a university must reflect the direction the students want to see. I have spoken with students from the University of Oregon who are outraged the university has decided to carry out construction projects the students do not want. They recently removed nearly 200 student parking spaces to build an alumni building without asking a single student's opinion.
Students at OSU were concerned about losing parking near the MU for the building of the MU annex. There are already very few places for students to park on campus and the removal of more spaces only exacerbates the situation. The status of our recreational sports facilities, as they stand, need to be improved. The turf inside McAlexander Fieldhouse is loose and a major safety issue. With the amount of rain we see in the Northwest, the intramural fields can reach a dangerously unsafe and slippery state. In an obese society we should create the most safe and appealing opportunities for healthy living as possible. And finally, turf fields and an upgraded McAlexander will be a wonderful recruiting tool to bring in more students.
I was very disappointed at the tone of the editorial and resent the suggestion that we must "get [our] priorities straight." I am glad I attend a university that cares about my opinion and actually listens to the wants and needs of the student body. Get off your high horse Daily Barometer.
