After winning the Mountain West regular season title, the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs were awarded the chance to host a regional competition at beautiful Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.
The No. 13 Horned Frogs (36-16) open the first round of the NCAA Tournament playing Wright State. The TCU baseball team has slowly worked its way into national recognition during the past few years, and it will be the only team in the Fort Worth Regional ranked in the Baseball America College Top 25.
The Horned Frogs started off their tough non-conference schedule with a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton. The Titans, who are the No. 2 seed in the nation for the NCAA Tournament, took the first game of the series before dropping the next two to Texas Christian.
TCU continued its schedule with tournament teams Ole Miss, Baylor, Wichita State, Texas State, Minnesota and Oklahoma. In that opening stretch, which lasted from Feb. 20 to March 17, the Horned Frogs went 9-6 against tournament squads.
After opening the Mountain West season, TCU took two of three games from tournament-bound Utah. The Horned Frogs dropped two games at home to San Diego State, including an opening-game 11-5 loss to arguably the best pitcher in the nation: Stephen Strasburg.
During the 2009 season, TCU met up with tournament teams 33 times, finishing 17-16 record against these teams. Only 19 of the Horned Frogs games came against non-tournament teams.
Texas Christian met Fort Worth Regional opponent Texas A&M in an extra-inning game in April. The 4-3 10-inning game in College Station, Texas, ended with the Aggies defeating the Horned Frogs.
After winning five-straight games at the end of the regular season, TCU entered the MWC Tournament as the top seed. Opening play on their home field, the Horned Frogs opened the conference tournament with a 9-7 loss to Utah. After a win over Brigham Young, TCU was knocked out of the tournament with a second loss to the Utes.
