Last year's winner: Honest to Empire
Issue date: 5/29/09 Section: Diversions
Q: Members?
A: Roland Ashton (vocals and keys), Justin Gibson (guitar and vocals), Ryan Ronnander (guitar), Peter Mart (bass) and Charley McGowan (drums)
Q: Where did you get your band name?
A: We used to have another bassist, and we were looking for names and a friend of the old bassist suggested it to him, and it was the best out of anything else we had, so we took it.
Q: Influences?
A: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pantera, In Flames, Tool, Thrice, Dream Theater, Metallica
Q: How long have you been together?
A: We've been together for about three years as a band. Charley is going to be leaving after the battle, so if any drummers want to come and drum for HTE, they'll be looking for a new drummer.
Q: Got any pre-show rituals?
A: Nothing consistent, usually just hanging out and having a beer when we can.
Q: Preparations for the battle?
A: We had the set we were going to play weeks ago, and we've just been practicing it over and over and over. Muscle memory is key.
Q: What is your most memorable moment as a band?
A: Most memorable moment as a band would be winning the battle last year I'd say. We've all been huge fans of the OSU Battle of the Bands, and the first year we tried out we didn't even make it in. The next year we landed an 8:30 time slot, then after that a 9:30 time slot which ended up in first place - we were all really proud that our hard work had finally paid off.
Q: Favorite song you've written?
A: As a band, everyone has their own favorites so it's hard to nail down just one, but the song that seems to have become our most legendary (if that's the right word) is "Wildfire."
