This weekend, Casey Masterson will take to the starting line as the only Oregon State runner qualified for the NCAA Regional Track Meet, hosted at Hayward Field in Eugene. Masterson, a redshirt freshman, will be racing in the 1,500-meter at 3:20 on Friday afternoon.
The regional track meet brings together the best competitors in the West. On Friday, Masterson will race against 21 of the nation's best runners, and if she finishes with one of the top 12 fastest times of the day, she will go on to race in the finals on Saturday.
"I'm really excited for Casey to have qualified as a redshirt freshman in one of the strongest events in our West Region," head coach Kelly Sullivan said. "There are 21 [runners] entered in her event, and she is just one of three freshman who have qualified."
After completing an incredible finish in the preliminaries at the Pac-10 Championship meet two weeks ago, Masterson scratched out of the finals due to heat exhaustion. Masterson was advised by the athletic trainers on site that if she wanted to be in good health for the regionals, she should not participate in the final race of the Pac-10 meet.
"She has had a great year, from cross country this fall to setting a new indoor mile record, and then doing the same outdoors in the 1,500 meters," Sullivan said. "[From preliminaries], they will advance 12 to the final, and that will be our goal, and then from there if she can advance, it's anyone's guess."
Currently, Masterson is ranked 16th in the 1,500-meter. Masterson holds the Oregon State record for the fastest outdoor 1,500 as well as indoor mile.
Masterson posted her record 1,500 time of 4:25.81 at the Pac-10 Championship meet. Not only does Masterson hold the school record for the 1,500-meter, she also holds the outdoor 800-meter record at Oregon State with a time of 2:11.29, which she set early in May of this year.
"This is a true example of how far she has come since arriving here," Sullivan said.
