The Oregon State women's rowing team is headed to New Jersey at the beginning of the week to get prepared for the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships.

After a great racing performance at the Pac-10 Championships, the No. 11 Beavers have been invited to compete in the NCAA Championship Regatta hosted by Villanova University at Cooper River Park in N.J. this weekend, May 29-31.

Women's rowing at OSU hasn't qualified for the NCAA Championships since 2000 and are anticipating the big event. The Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and the Varsity 4+ crews will represent OSU in the regatta.

"We are just so stoked and excited to be going," junior varsity rower Devery Karz said. "As a team we have to go out and race our race."

The team headed to New Jersey a whole week early to prepare themselves for the diverse weather and change in the time zone.

Celia Magistrale, varsity coxswain, said the team is preparing as much as possible for the upcoming competition. "The competition isn't any different than what we have already seen. This season we have raced against the top teams in the nation and have seen speed all year long."

On top of the excitement of the NCAA Championships, this week also called for a celebration for individual honors. Ame Hicks, Katie Humm and Jenny Kossowsky were recognized by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) with the Division 1 all-region award, Hicks and Kossowsky were honored with first team all-region and Humm with second team for outstanding performance as rowers. Hicks and Humm were also named to the 2009 All-Pac-10 team.

Seniors Jane Ivey and Melissa Penwell were named as CRCA National Scholar-Athletes both carrying a 3.84 GPA, marking the third year both have received these honors.

Ivey hasn't been able to hold back her excitement about making it to nationals this year and when it was announced she said she broke into tears. "I am really excited for nationals. I feel it is well deserved. No one on our team has been and I couldn't be more proud of everyone."
