Crowds, alcohol bring out the worst in some
Issue date: 6/1/09 Section: Forum
There have been several incidents at OSU this term - and this year - that have made us ashamed to be students of this university.
It has been a recurring theme for some OSU students, when involved in crowd situations, to act like Neanderthals when things take a turn for the worse. Much of this probably stems from excessive alcohol use.
When technical problems got in the way of the show and its sound system at the Nappy Roots concert two weekends ago, the crowd reacted in an uproar, booing the band and, in one case, throwing a full can of Rockstar onto the stage, where it exploded and could have destroyed expensive equipment or seriously injured a member of the band. That's when the band's manager decided to pull the plug.
Obviously, it wasn't the band's fault that the sound system was malfunctioning. Students were understandably disgruntled at having paid $15 and not getting their money's worth, but what kind of childish immaturity does it take to lash out violently by throwing something on the stage?
Nappy Roots obviously won't be visiting Corvallis again anytime soon, and when other artists hear about our reputation, they'll probably follow suit.
In another incident at the Flat Tail Festival on Saturday night, police had to break up numerous fights and arrest people in the crowd for being too rowdy. One student brought a homemade explosive device with him to the concert, which was found on his person after he was caught urinating in public.
This behavior is completely disgraceful. What was this kid thinking? Why would anyone bring a bomb to a free concert put on for you by the MUPC?
Saturday evening was supposed to be a fun and free event for students and the Corvallis community to attend to celebrate the end of the school year. Instead, the headlining act was shut down because he brought marijuana on stage and was singing about it to the crowd, and the approximately 600 people in attendance were drunk and disorderly, nearly causing a riot.
