Summer Blockbusters
Tim Pfarr and Ross Leonard
Issue date: 6/5/09 Section: Diversions
"Up"
Rating: PG
Already open
Starring the voices of: Ed Asner, Jordan Nagai, Christopher Plummer
Pixar is back again, this time with "Up," the story of a 78-year-old balloon salesman who ties thousands of balloons to his house and floats into the sky.
While it may be tough for Pixar to top its previous masterpiece "WALL-E," this one is sure to be just as entertaining, as the animation studio very rarely strikes out. The studio's animation seems to improve with every feature, and the stories are always fantastic.
For old and young audiences alike, this one is a must for the summer, and it's already out in theaters with the first wave of summer blockbusters. This film has received absolutely stellar reviews from critics across the country.
"The Hangover"
Rating: R
Opens today
Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis
It's been nine years since the release of crazy-night-I-don't-remember-film "Dude, Where's My Car?" That means it's time for another one? Well, sort of. "The Hangover," directed by Todd Phillips (director of "Old School"), tells the story of the aftermath of a wild night in Las Vegas, and the group of men wake up to discover a tiger in their hotel room among other things. "The Hangover" will march boldly into the same territory as "Dude," but with R-rated material that is actually funny. Former "Daily Show" star Ed Helms co-stars in this one, and Mike Tyson and his creepy face tattoo will make an appearance before the end of the film. It opened today, so take a break from studying and check it out.
"Brüno"
Rating: R
Opens July10
Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen
Either you love Sacha Baron Cohen or you hate him. He's coming back this summer with "Bruno," which chronicles the antics of his character of the same name, who is a gay Austrian supermodel.
If you're unfamiliar with Cohen's style, it may be best to watch a trailer before diving head-first into this film; it is bound to be a walk on the wild side. The humor is guaranteed to be raunchy, offensive, absurd and absolutely hilarious - much like it was in Cohen's 2006 film "Borat."
