Oregon State University student and Lambda Chi Alpha member Cody Thompson passed away late in the evening on Thursday, June 18 after suffering serious head injuries during a longboarding accident earlier that day.

"He came around a corner, had a pretty hard fall and hit his head on the road," said Zak Holt, a fraternity brother and close friend who was longboarding with Thompson when the accident happened.

Holt said Thompson had purchased the longboard last spring term and looked forward to riding a lot during the summer.

"What happened to Cody was a tragedy," said Erick Edtl, a friend of Thompson's since elementary school and fellow officer of the Oregon State University Student Foundation. "He was such a caring and incredible person."

The Student Foundation has created a $2,500 Cody Thompson Scholarship in honor of Thompson's service to the organization.

Edtl also spoke of Thompson's fearless ambition and admirable sense of direction.

"He knew what he wanted in life and he worked hard for it," he said.

After completing his undergraduate studies in Health Management and Policy in 2010, Edtl said that Thompson had planned to attend Portland State University to pursue a Masters in Business Administration.

"He always had a passion for working in health care," Andrea Lane said. Lane was Thompson's girlfriend of just over two years. Lane explained that in his spare time he would do research on how hospitals and clinics were run because he wanted to someday start up his own preventative health care clinic.

Thompson embodied his wellness ideals as a person who loved working out, playing sports and exploring the outdoors. He was an Eagle Scout and member of several different Intramural Sports teams through his fraternity.

On top of IM's, Thompson was an active member of his fraternity, holding the House Manager officer position as well as Brotherhood Educator. He was also a member of the executive committee, essentially the judicial body within the house, while also being a Co-Recruitment chair, a role he was to assume this summer.
