OSU business students now have a wider selection of choices after the Oregon State Board of Higher Education approved four new bachelor degrees within the College of Business at their latest meeting.
In addition to business administration, the OSU College of Business now offers degrees in business information systems, finance, management and marketing. The options of international business and entrepreneurship are still available when paired with other business-related majors.
The OSU-Cascades campus also offers general business.
The option for students to declare any of these five majors began this fall term. By adding these four new degrees as well as the already existent accountancy degree, the OSU College of Business now holds the largest selection of undergraduate business majors within the Oregon University System.
According to Ilene Kleinsorge, the head dean for the College of Business, the college began their transformation back in December 2005 when they drafted a new strategic framework in response to the last budget reduction.
"Of all Oregon businesses, 98 percent have 100 or less employees," Kleinsorge said. "Of that group of businesses, 78 percent have four or less employees, so the probability that graduates will work for small employers is fairly high. The College of Business needed a stronger foundation of business requirements so students could have a more sufficient depth in their discipline. That way, when students graduate, they will be more valuable to their employers."
Adopting a professional school model was the first step taken in the transformation process back in 2006.
After assessing input from students, faculty and staff also reviewed and crafted an entirely new business core. Classes were revised and new ones were added. Additionally, ten credits were added to the business core, which was primarily funded by private alumni donations.
Accounting was the first specialized option to be created into a major, beginning in 2007.
