When eight seniors walked away from Paul Lorenz Field for the last time on Sunday, they did so as winners, thanks to a 2-1 win over the University of Washington.
The win kept Oregon State (11-6-1, 3-4-0 Pac-10) hovering around the .500 mark in conference and kept them in position to finish in the top half of the Pac-10 come this time next week.
The win also was a big one from the seniors' standpoint, of course.
"It was a big win and an emotional victory for our seniors," head coach Linus Rhode said.
Senior forward Melissa Peck put Oregon State on the board first when she scored her fifth goal of the season on a pass from freshman midfielder Megan Miller in the 62nd minute.
Six minutes later, the Huskies responded with a goal of their own.
Just like things unfolded in Oregon State's win over the University of Oregon at Paul Lorenz two weeks ago, the go-ahead goal came courtesy of redshirt freshman Chelsea Buckland's right foot. The goal came on Oregon State's third corner kick of the game. Junior midfielder Courtney Wetzel played the corner into the box, which is where Buckland controlled it and put it past the Huskies' keeper.
"I am proud of the way the team stuck together for the full 90 minutes," Rhode said. "We responded after Washington tied the game and we picked up a huge victory."
The goal was Buckland's sixth of the season, and her fourth game-winner. The win helped the Beavers avoid dropping both of their final two home games, because two days prior No. 19 Washington State spoiled Oregon State's night before Halloween with a 1-0 win over the Beavers.
It was the Beavers' fourth shutout loss of the conference season. The contest's lone goal came in the 40th minute, when freshman midfielder Brandi Vega scored on a rebound after her teammate's shot went off the post.
Oregon State had several chances at an equalizer late in the game, but failed to cash in.
"We played well for a majority of the match, but we let our guard down for about 20 minutes in the first half," Rhode said.
Oregon State travels to Tempe, Arizona to face the Arizona State Sun Devils Friday before heading to Tucson to take on the Arizona Wildcats Sunday.
The Arizona school's are ninth and eighth in the conference, respectively, so Oregon State needs a sweep to keep any postseason hopes alive.
